Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment

Our addiction psychiatrists, physicians and trauma therapists can treat the underlying causes and present day behaviors connected to alcohol and substance misuse.

At the Psychologist

Substance and Alcohol Disorder Treatment

People with trauma often use substances to calm their overactive nervous systems, which can lead to misuse. We utilize harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and EMDR to get to the root of the problem and reduce or eliminate problematic substance use.

Services at Midtown Center for Treatment and Research

  • Intake and Treatment Evaluation includes an initial evaluation session, followed by a medical and psychiatric evaluation by a member of Midtown Center's medical staff.

  • Individualized Treatment Planning tailored to the individual’s needs that include a blend of group and individual therapy modalities. Treatment aims to foster peer support and empathy while addressing the individual’s unique life issues in one-on-one therapy sessions.

  • Group Psychotherapy - is our core treatment approach. It includes all aspects of the recovery process including both didactic/education and emotional support, facilitated by a licensed clinician. Participants in a group treatment milieu for substance use disorders exhibit more improvement on typical outcome measures and group engagement aids in the development of a strong, sober recovery network.

  • Individual Psychotherapy - includes a wide range of therapeutic interventions addressing the cognitive-emotional underpinnings of addiction. We employ Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Mindfulness, Trauma-focused therapy with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Neurofeedback, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as indicated.

  • Medication-Assisted Treatment – medication can be used to support recovery.

    • Opiates - Suboxone and other medications.

    • Alcohol - Naltrexone and Antabuse

    • Cigarettes and Nicotine Vaping - Chantix and other medications

Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health have found that people with a mental disorder, such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may use drugs or alcohol as a form of self-medication.

  • DWI Screening, Assessment, and Treatment Services - available for those referred through the court system as a result of a driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrest. We communicate with the courts after a completed screening/evaluation.
